The Town
Gouritsmond is a small coastal town on the west side of the mighty Gourits River, where its mouth meets the Indian Ocean. Gourits, originally known as "The Fisheries", was inhabited by farmers as early as 1730, but was officially established in 1915. For centuries before this, the area was inhabited by Khoihoi shepherds and San hunters.
This coastal hideaway is one of the few hidden gems where one can still relax and enjoy a peaceful getaway, away from the hustle and bustle of city living.
The Gourits River is the second largest flood river in South Africa, and has a slipway for boats to launch. Spend your day on the river, or for more adrenaline, go through the river mouth for a deep sea fishing trip. Gouritsmond offers a large variety of fish species to catch.
Gouritsmond has a 12km long stretch of coastal road, linking it to Reins Nature Reserve. Exploring this coastal road is a must!

Gouritsmond, is one of the best locations for deep sea fishing in South Africa, a veritable fishing hotspot. It is famous for its large cob with an average weight of 8-15 kg, holding the record for the biggest cob (76.9 kg). Unofficially two even larger cobs were recorded here.
Other commonly targeted fish species are hake, poenskop, yellow tail, skipjack, tuna and bottom fish like red romans and rock cods. Our best fishing months are from October to April.
